Social (Pragmatic) Language TherapySocial (Pragmatic) Language Therapy
What is Social Pragmatic Language?
Social pragmatics encompasses the social rules and contexts of communication. This includes understanding nonverbal cues like facial expressions and body language, knowing when and how to interrupt appropriately, staying on topic during conversations, and recognizing when someone is joking versus being serious. These skills are crucial for building friendships, succeeding in school, and feeling confident in social situations.
Who Benefits from This Therapy?
Social pragmatic language therapy focuses on helping children develop the essential communication skills needed to navigate social interactions successfully. Some children may struggle with the unwritten rules of communication—knowing how to start a conversation, take turns, read social cues, or adjust their communication style based on their audience.
Children who may benefit from social pragmatic language therapy often:
Have difficulty making and maintaining friendships
Struggle with back-and-forth conversations
Miss social cues or nonverbal communication
Have trouble understanding sarcasm, jokes, or figurative language
Interrupt frequently or have difficulty taking conversational turns
Seem "too direct" or unaware of social boundaries
Experience anxiety in social situations or have limited practice in social settings
Have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, or social communication disorder
Our Approach
Our social pragmatic language therapy is practical and play-based, meeting children where they are developmentally. We create real-world scenarios and practice opportunities that feel natural and engaging. Sessions might include role-playing social situations, practicing conversation skills through games, working on reading facial expressions and body language, and developing problem-solving strategies for challenging social moments.
We work closely with families to ensure skills generalize beyond the therapy room by keeping parents involved in sessions for parent training. Parents receive live coaching on strategies to support social communication at home and in the community.
